Wire Rope Recommendations for Well Servicing Applications

Recommended wire rope

Pros

Cons

Flex-X 9

      High strength

      Crush resistant

Better fatigue resistance than 6X31 Swaged

Designed to have broken wires on outside

Light loads and fatigue. 6X26 or 6X31 will be better

6 x 26 WS IWRC

The 6 x 19 class rope with the best combination of resistance to fatigue, wear and crushing for most tubing lines.

Other constructions can provide better fatigue resistance and/or crushing resistance.

6 x 31 WS IWRC

Improved fatigue resistance compared to the 6 x 26 rope

Reduced resistance to wear and crushing compared to a 6X26 rope.

6 x 31 swaged IWRC

A specialty wire rope with the best resistance to crushing and wear.  Use where drum crushing is the primary reason for rope removal.

Less fatigue resistance than 6 x 26 WS, and does not perform well in light loads.

NOTE: 19 x 7 RR ropes are not recommended for this application because they tend to crush more easily, have lower strength and are susceptible to becoming unbalanced.
